Metropolitan Shopping Centre

In metro Adelaide, we installed our People Flux video based people counting system at all entrances to the main mall. The centre is a T-shaped mall where the main entrance (South) is a long strip that comes to the junction at which either end (East and West) has a minor entry point.

In many centres, management will often sell space to small business wanting a temporary position in the mall to attract customers. At this particular centre, businesses would want to setup near the main entrance as it is the most "attractive" position, in front of beautiful big glass doors and it appears as the gateway to the mall.

Once People Flux was installed, however, we could see the real figures of the centre and get an understanding of the foot traffic through the mall. The South Entry, the main entrance, had a relatively equal proportion of people coming in and out every day. However, the east and west entrances were starkly different. In the mornings, the East entrance had a high number of "Ins" and a lower number of "Outs". The afternoons were the opposite. The West entrances showed the exact opposite to the East entrance.

Given these numbers, Centre Management were able to conclude that people were using that section of the mall as a thoroughfare. People were not necessarily going in to the mall for what that section offered but because it made their commute to work and school easier or more enjoyable. This allowed Centre Management to target specific industries to book the pop-up spaces, increase their revenue, and potentially change the product mix of the area to cater for those businesses that can service the needs of that foot traffic.
